The Kids Are All Right: Our Review

Being that we made some commentary on this movie in show #70 we decided to each pay $13. to the straight men, the wealthy Hollywood actors and the Lesbian director profiting from this movie.
Here’s a clue for the small minority of people whining “But you haven’t seeeeeeeeeeeeen it yet” … uhhh… sending a Lesbian with even a droplet of self-esteem to see this movie is mistaken. It is INDEED about a “Lesbian” having an affair with a sweaty dirt bag sperm donor.

Simply put…this movie is f*cking disgusting.

At one point, I actually got weepy at the level of betrayal I felt knowing a Lesbian apparently co-wrote and directed this film. It certainly wasn’t due to the writing, story, or acting…that’s for sure. Annette Benning may be up for an Oscar? Huh? The movie is terrible and… it had maybe one or two moments at best. I went in expecting to get kicked in the face, but I was also expecting a really well made film after finding out it was the same director of High Art which I thought was fantastic. I didn’t expect this boring movie that dragged on and on and on to an idiotic non-conclusion. I gleaned absolutely nothing from this film except confirmation of the lengths sellouts will go to for five minutes of fame and recognition.

What were even more harrowing were the scattered half-laughs and whispers from the men and mostly straight white couples in the nearly empty Upper East Side Manhattan movie theater.

Vomit Spoiler Alert for Lesbian Bulimics: Julianne Moore’s eyes widening and her shrieking “WHOA! WOW! OH YES!” when she pulled down Paul’s underwear….. as if that’s what she’s been missing her whole life….??? listen, I have a weak stomach with certain things. I could have puked right there in the aisle.

Short story long, this movie broke my heart. I am saddened, angry and feel very alienated by Gay Inc. for not taking a single solitary issue with it. GLAAD issues dozens of inane press releases daily and they didn’t manage to find even the slightest inaccuracy or defamation in the portrayal of a “Lesbian” getting f*cked every which way to Sunday by a dude? Here’s news: the overwhelming majority of Lesbians outwardly reject this film. Taking some Jerry Springer situation and pushing it out to the masses and marketing it as a “Lesbian Movie” is horrifyingly irresponsible and sellout. There are so few films in mainstream involving lesbians, they know damn well how damaging this image is.

Well, let this be a lesson to Lesbians…..YOU are on your own.

Derrick Jensen said it perfectly, in a different context but it applies here:

“Identification with a community only works when the community is serving you as well.”

We are sick of movies and shows depicting “Lesbians” f*cking men. The End. And if the people who produce this kind of thing knew we wouldn’t just sit down and shut up and we’d hold them accountable, we could discourage it. It isn’t just a matter of a difference of opinion …this film perpetuates the damaging myth that only men’s sexuality is certain and Lesbians are not really Lesbians, especially when they are more feminine.

We are really over it.

I’d sooner support a movie featuring finger puppets than this one.

COME ON, Juliet. Do not lie. It isn’t just Julianne Moore’s (fluid? I missed that) character portrayed as a dickworshipper. Even Annette B brings up (enthusiastically) the watching of the gay male porn for their “lesbian” sex scene (undercover as it is) and having the cocktoy shaped vibrator (unnecessarily revealed later by teen boys) applied to her sex.

Is that plain enough for you? EVERY SINGLE PLOTPOINT IN THIS SHITFEST negated lesbian sexuality and showed a camera and story obsession for dicks and men.

At the end, they even hold hands like a desexed couple of spinster aunts that society wants us to be.

    EAT MY ASS MAINSTREAM.

Oh, and go watch Elena Undone if you want to see what two women getting it on feels like.

I have to say I’m STUNNED at how good the reviews have been. Seriously? The pulling down pants scene was unbelievable.

  23. genx says:

Thanks for being understanding. I can totally see why you would relate to her character. I have to be honest I think most people feel underepresented in the LGBT community. I guess it’s important for us to hear each other out and try to understand one another. A lot of lesbians are upset by the movie because it is reaching probably the largest mainstream audience any “lesbian” movie ever has and it’s focus is on her sleeping with a guy. So it’s not a lesbian movie but being pimped as one. I am through supporting lesbian and gay film makers who misrepresent lesbians for male fantasy. How many times I’ve been out with my girlfriend and a guy comes over and hits on us and I’ll say thanks and sorry we’re not interested we’re together and they act like we didn’t say anything at all, or worse yet they get in predator mode as if it means two for the price of one. A big part of it has to do with how we are represented in the media. Thanks for listening.

  24. Juliet says:

My bad- I must have missed that part where she identified her sexuality. But I do think her speech about fluid sexuality established her as a bit more of a 5 on the Kinsey Scale. As a bisexual lady, I often feel totally under represented in queer films, so I just totally related to her character and may have just placed her in the bi category.

I can see what you mean about it being marketed as a lesbian movie – the one time a mainstream lesbian movie comes out and it’s about one of them fucking a dude. Fair enough.

  25. genx says:

Sorry you felt attacked Juliette but I believe I attacked your analysis, not your sexuality. They have been marketing it as a Lesbian movie and she goes on to call herself a Lesbian after having a raging affair with a man that she completely enjoyed. Scene after scene of straight sex with a woman was supposedly a “Lesbian.” The whole point of the problem with this movie is that the character is bisexual not a lesbian. I’m sure you can understand why your comment was offensive being that you didn’t have the right information. I do offer my apologies for responding in that way though. I would not have any problem with this movie if it was marketed as a bisexual movie.

  26. Juliet says:

I’m sorry – I was under the impression Julianne Moore’s character was bisexual as well and thus why all lesbian-kind should not be taking her fucking a guy as a personal attack.

I feel like your attack on my sexuality there was really uncalled for. I am offering a perspective on a movie, not telling you who to love.

  27. genx says:

I love it best when bisexuals like Juliette try to preach to Lesbians about Lesbian sexuality. Funny how het privilege makes you feel at liberty to blabber on about concerns that you know nothing about. Do you go preaching to other races and religions that you know nothing about telling them how they should feel too?

Of course Juliette a bisexual woman doesn’t see any problems with this bisexual movie. The reason you don’t have a problem with it Juliette is because you are a bisexual. Lesbians don’t sleep with men – bisexuals do. Maybe guys think you’re really jazzy but we happen to think you should yap less and listen more. You might actually learn something.

And yeah, you did miss the point.

  28. Juliet says:

    My two cents:

Julianne Moore’s character introduces herself as sexually fluid. The movie expresses the lesbian couple’s interest in the apparent raw sexuality that comes from men – hence the sex to gay porn they have in the first bit of the film.

Just because she’s having sex with a man, I don’t think that makes her lesbian relationship any less so. As a bisexual woman myself, I totally related to that film because men and women are so different and she found herself (wrongfully) wanting for that sleezebag instead of going home and appreciating her wife.

This is not a personal attack on lesbians – it’s not saying that all a lesbian is missing is a hot dicking – it’s just a story about a screwed up woman projecting her issues in screwed up ways. It so happened to be about a lesbian family, but I don’t know if it would’ve made a difference, to me, if she was cheating with a woman.

Maybe it’s just me- and I am really missing the part where the movie made a mockery of homosexual relationships, but I feel like it’s not a story about men and women – it’s a story about love and family – the end.

  29. PBMonkeyKing says:

Come on, finger puppets are awesome. Don’t on the finger puppets! They know lesbians don’t secretly want to sleep with dudes!

I get your review from a gblt/lesbian perspective. I totally understand. This is my only comment in support of the movie. My mom came to my house last weekend, bought a paper because she had seen the previews, specifically with an agenda to go see it. A straight woman/mom from the upper midwest with a lesbian daughter who’s always been supportive, and has always sat through the glbt movies I’ve thought she’d watch or tolerate because I thought they were good storylines and meaningful…and she’s always been great. But this movie, this one she came to me with paper in hand to go to an obscure theatre in downtown Mpls (the only theatre showing it in the whole metro…maybe even state of MN) requesting to see a movie with lesbian lead characters instead of wanting to go to Toy Story 3 or something. To me that means some kind of progress and visibility. She doesn’t get that it may not be real lesbian life. She gets that there’s a movie she’s seen commercials for on tv with gay people as leading characters that looks like one she might like and wants to take me to it…and that was just fine with me!
